Operation confirmations: recording output, time, and production losses

An operation confirmation records the work actually performed. Good yield, scrap and rework explain the output; setup, run, labor and downtime explain the time used. These measures support both operational control and cost analysis.

DNA confirmation selects a released production order and operation. Work center, operator and shift provide context. Saving invokes the confirmation posting workflow and may request backflush material consumption. On the final operation, automatic goods receipt can receive finished output, so switches must be reviewed before saving.

Why the confirmation matters

The routing describes expected work. The confirmation records actual execution at an operation. It helps the business understand whether the process produced the expected output with the expected resource use.

Work centre, operator, and shift provide context for the observation. A quantity without that context may be difficult to relate to the correct operation or period.

Good output and losses

An operation processes 100 pieces: 94 good, 4 scrap and 2 needing rework. Reporting 100 as good yield hides the quality loss and can overstate available finished stock. Recording the downtime reason helps explain why labor or machine time exceeded plan.

Good yield, scrap, and rework have different operational meanings. Reporting every processed piece as good output can overstate the supply available for the next operation or finished stock. Treating rework as entirely new output can also inflate quantities.

Time categories

Setup prepares the operation. Run or labour time describes work performed. Downtime explains periods when planned work did not proceed. Their precise configured definitions should be used consistently.

A long operation can arise from a more complex setup, slow processing, missing material, or machine failure. Combining all time into one unexplained total can make the variance visible without revealing its cause.

Automatic effects

DNA confirmations can trigger backflush consumption and, at the final operation where configured, automatic goods receipt. The confirmation can therefore affect more than a production-status display.

This relationship needs to be understood when another team considers a manual material issue or finished-goods receipt. The same event should not be recorded twice through separate routes.

A useful actual-versus-plan comparison

The comparison should use the correct operation, production version, quantity basis, and time definitions. A change in product mix or batch size can affect setup and run expectations even when the station performs well.

Accurate confirmations make operational improvement possible. They explain what was achieved, what resources were used, and which losses deserve investigation. DNA connects that evidence to the order and its cost interpretation.
