Work in progress and settlement: completing the financial account of production

Work in progress, or WIP, represents resources associated with unfinished or not-yet-settled production under the company's accounting treatment. Material, labour, machine, and other supported costs can accumulate against the order before the final financial result is settled.

WIP helps distinguish resources committed to production from ordinary warehouse stock or completed financial outcomes.

Operational completion and financial completion

A factory can finish the physical work while some material returns, confirmations, charges, or cost reviews remain unresolved. Conversely, a cost report can exist while the underlying execution is incomplete.

DNA Production Costing distinguishes an open WIP document from the settlement action. Settlement requests the relevant balance treatment at the selected target under the required approval and account conditions; the returned result and linked records establish completion. A saved costing record therefore does not by itself prove that settlement has occurred.

A practical order position

A production order has consumed materials and recorded labour, but a subcontract invoice has not yet been considered. Settling on an incomplete cost basis may leave the result difficult to explain when the missing charge appears.

The business needs a clear policy for completeness and timing. The lesson is to understand what the current cost includes and what remains unresolved, rather than assume that a finished-goods receipt proves every cost is final.

Settlement destination

DNA supports settlement targets including finished goods, a cost centre or a project. The target and accounts determine where the WIP balance is represented financially. They should express the approved accounting treatment for the order and its output.

A technically balanced settlement to the wrong destination can still distort reporting. Account mapping and cost-component interpretation therefore remain important at the end of production, not only when the masters are first configured.

Variance and remaining balances

The planned-versus-actual difference helps explain the outcome, while the remaining WIP balance identifies an unsettled position under the process. These measures should be interpreted together with the order state and supporting documents.

An unexplained residual may indicate missing activity, an incomplete settlement, or another supported adjustment. It should not be removed merely because management expects a closed order to show zero.

A coherent final account

A useful production close explains the product and good quantity produced, the resources consumed, losses or rework, actual cost, variance, and settlement destination. It also explains any authorised later corrections.

DNA's order, execution, costing, and settlement relationships provide the evidence. Financial completion is reliable when those records tell the same story as the physical production process.
